Lawyers are complex, irrational and emotional!
… when it comes to the business side of their work and this causes a loss of revenue and other problems too.
By the way, so is everyone else – complex, irrational, and emotional too.
Below is a conversation I had during a training session on How to Get Paid Your True Worth which I delivered to a group of lawyers.
🟣Director: I always round down what is on the clock.
💎Me: Give me an example please.
🟣Director: Say the clock shows the equivalent of £530, I round it down to £500
💎Me: Why?
🟣Director: I don’t know.
💎Me: When will you stop doing this?
🟣Director: Now!
💎Me: That is the right answer. 😊
As this was habitual behaviour, I wonder how many times a week she did this and what that was costing the firm.
Let’s work through an example.
Say she was raising 10 invoices a week and rounding down £30 each time, that’s £300 a week.
Multiply this by 46 weeks (allowing for holidays and sick days) and that is a cool £13,800.
Right off the bottom line.
And the chances are it would have been more.
Although this is a simple example, the fact that she didn’t know why she did it proves the point of behaviour being irrational.
It is also largely unconscious.
So what other irrational behaviours are going on in your business which mean you are losing money off your bottom line?
Don’t know?
Maybe it’s time to find out.
